Since 1855, Bates College has been dedicated to the emancipating potential of the liberal arts. Bates educates the whole person through creative and rigorous scholarship in a collaborative residential community.
2017–18 was a year of continued momentum for the college. Applications for admission increased by 45 percent in one year.
Inaugurated in 1998, the Phillips Society honors the landmark $9-million endowment bequest of Bates’ fourth president, Charles F. Phillips, and his wife, Evelyn Minard Phillips.
